Take a look at the below list of Top 10 Most Googled People in The World 2016-2017. Many people are looked up on the Internet in a given year, yes, too many to mention. Yet in every year, there are those that stand out because of their notoriety, or for the good they have done. These people are most noteworthy for one or more reasons–whether it’s because they’re running for President, have cut an award winning album, or have declared their sexual orientation. There are many other things that make a person stand out in a given year. 2016 was no different, and this post will talk about 10 such individuals, and will attempt to explain the reason these people have made it to Google’s top 10 for their year. 2016 is not done yet as of this writing, but when it is, there will be a list of 10 most Googled for that year, as well.
List of Top 10 Most Googled People in The World 2016-2017
10. Josh Duggar
The reason his name has made the list is not a very flattering one. Joshua James Duggar was a reality show star whose claim to fame is that he was a boy growing up in a conservative Christian household, who has been accused of molesting five girls, was also alleged to have sexually assaulted a pornography star (those allegations have proven to be false), and have belonged to a website known as the Ashley Madison agency which offers dates with others to people in already committed relationships. The show on which he starred–Nineteen Kids and Counting–was cancelled by the network because of such allegations, on July 16, 2015.
This British blue-eyed soul singer, now 28, got a lot of hits in late 2016 when her album came out, with her #1 single, “Hello”–about a man she runs into with whom she was once in a relationship. The most poignant part of the song is that he is now married to someone else, and yet one senses that the old feelings are back. This type of song is one of a type of songs for which this plus-sized, blond-haired singer is best known. Adele is quite popular, and it is no surprise that her name receives many hits. People want to know all they possibly can about her.
8. Rachel Dolezal
She did what? She allowed people to believe she was a fair-skinned Black woman for a long time. It was later discovered that she was a White woman posing as a Black woman. In the most racially tense times since the 1950s and ’60s, this, of course, was controversial. It came out, she admitted to it, but told the Guardian that she wasn’t really meaning to offend people, she was merely being herself. Whether you admire her for what she did, or choose to hate her, she did grab the attention of the media, as well as people on the Internet.
7. Brian Williams
Up until the time he was discovered having lied about his wartime experiences, he was a respected newsman who took the place of Peter Jennings after his 2005 cancer death. This is an example of a person whose notoriety and apparent lack of character caused him to make the list of most Googled people in 2016-2017. On March 26, 2003, he told the story of having been aboard a plane during the Iraq War of 2003 that was hit by Chinook fire, that was forced to make an emergency landing. The pilot of that plane in 2015 came out and said that Williams was never on that plane. In February 2015, the lie got him suspended without pay, then eventually fired.
6. Charlie Sheen
The troubled son of actor Martin Sheen, now in his early fifties, picked up a lot of hits on the Internet after coming out as HIV positive on November 17, 2015. He had known his diagnosis at least since 2011, he later admitted. He also admitted to having at lease 200 partners after that time. He also admits he has paid extortioners over $10 million to keep his condition a secret. It is against the law in many states, including Michigan, to knowingly have sex with someone without telling him or her that you are HIV positive if you know that you are. Apparently, Sheen has done just that. People want to know about him, perhaps, because they are in shock about how a human being could do such a wrong thing as what Sheen did.
5. Ruby Rose
She is an Australian MTV presenter who became best known in the States as Inmate Stella Carlin on the Netflix series, “Orange is the New Black.” She came out as gay at age 12, suffering mental taunts and physical abuse at the hands of her classmates. She attempted suicide as a result of the constant cruel taunts.
4. Donald Trump
He is the controversial Republican presidential candidate. He is known for the successful businesses he has run, as well as the negative comments that he has said about blacks, Hispanics, and women, army veterans with PTSD, just to name a few. As of right now his poll numbers are suffering, but it remains to be seen at this point whether he–or his competition, Hillary Rodham Clinton–will make it into the White House in January. Like all other candidates, he must garner 270 electoral votes before his opponent does. Trump, 70, is certainly on this list, for whatever reason people are interested in knowing more about him.
3. Ronda Rousey
She is the first woman to win the Olympics in Judo. In 2008, she won a gold medal. Rousey, now 29, won the fight in 2015 against Bethe Corveau in Brazil at IFC 190. However she lost to Holly Holm later in the year. Holm apparently high kicked her in the neck. For sustaining this injury, she was medically suspended from the league for about a month. On December 9, she was medically cleared. She is one amongst most googled peoples 2016-2017.
2. Caitlyn Jenner
Jenner, a former Olympian who was at one time known as Bruce Jenner, the Olympian of the 1970s, underwent a sex change and let everyone know that he was a transsexual who now wanted to be known as Caitlyn Jenner. Her move has been lauded as “brave” by several magazines around the world. In fact she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her courage for coming out as a woman.
1. Lamar Odom
His claim to fame–and the reason why he is here–is that he was a former basketball player married to a Kardashian. He fell ill on October 13, 2015, suffering several strokes and some kidney failure. He was found at Love Ranch, a Nevada brothel. He and Khloe Kardashian decided to call off their upcoming divorce after this incident. Wikipedia mentions that he was Number 1 on Google Trends in 2016-2017 for Google Trends highest number of hits for living people.
The people who had the most Internet traffic in Google searches in 2016-2017 were actors, would-be politicians, sports figures, and a disgraced news reporter as well. People were curious enough to search them, whether they were journalists seeking to research them so they could write an article on them–or nonjournalists who were merely curious about the publicity that surrounded them. At the end of the year, you will most likely see some of the same people on this list–particularly Donald Trump.
