In 1957, the US Army Corps of Engineers leased the lake to the Georgia Department of State Parks, who joined forces in 1962 with the newly formed Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority to develop a recreational area. By 1974, Lake Lanier Islands had been operational for a year, featuring boat docks, campgrounds, beaches, a golf course, and the Pine Isle Hotel. A water park opened in 1987.
