10. Wife carrying
Hailing from Finland, the goal of this sport is for a male competitor to race through an obstacle course while carrying his wife on his back. What do you get if you win? Well, supposedly you’re awarded the weight of your wife in beer. I mean, what else would you give the world’s best wife carrier? Lol. One of the most shocking things about this sport is that soon it might not be so obscure. It has recently begun to spread to other parts of the world including the United States and Australia.
9. Sepeak Takraw
This sport is most popular in Malaysia and Thailand. The sport was first played in the 15th century and has gone on to become the official sport of the monarchies of these two Asian countries. So how do you play this game? Well, it’s basically a mix of soccer and volleyball. Players are divided into two teams of three on what resembles a traditional volleyball court. The goal is to keep the ball airborne. The catch is that you can only use your feet, knees, or chin. Which often leads to some pretty acrobatic moves.
Invented by the Swiss, this sport, often translated as “Farmer’s golf” pits two eighteen player teams against each other for four quarters. To begin play a puck, (known as a “hornuss” in Switzerland) is launched into the air by the striker, who hits the puck with a whip to send it airborne. The players on the opposing team then try to knock the puck out of the air with schindels, big placards on long sticks, that they toss into the air. Although Hornuss is an old sport (the first documentation of the game is in 1625 when a complaint was made about two men playing on a Sunday). The sport is just now starting to gain recognition outside of Switzerland, with the first international association created in 2012.
A mixture of capture the flag and wrestling Kabaddi is a contact sport hailing from Bangladesh. During competition, a player known as a “raider” runs across the center line of the court and tries to tag players on the opposing team. But here’s the catch… The raider can’t take another breath until they have returned to their side of the court. To prove they haven’t inhaled they must chant “kabaddi” under their breath the entire time. If they fail to tag someone on the opposing team they won’t score a point. As strange as this game is, Kabaddi is popular in many countries, including India, Pakistan, Japan, and Iran. However, no country has taken a liking to Kabaddi quite like Bangladesh, who have boasted the strange game as their national sport.
Created by a Belgian and first played in Spain, Bossaball incorporates soccer, volleyball, gymnastics and Brazilian capoeira into one high flying game. The playing field consists of two trampolines, one on each side of the net, surrounded by a bouncy inflatable surface. One person from each team occupies the trampoline. Each team hits a ball back and forth over the net similar to volleyball, but with a lot of aerial acrobatics added in. This game actually looks like it would be pretty fun to play and watch.
Buzkashi, the national sport of Afghanistan, this is indeed one of the most bizarre sports 2017 on our list. The name literally means “goat bashing” in Turkish. In this competition, horse mounted players attempt to drag a goat carcass across a goal. Weird right? The game was once banned in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, but once the Taliban fell the game regained its national popularity. Competitions are usually held on Fridays and draw crowds numbering in the thousands, with the most popular riders being sponsored by wealthy Afghanis.
Created by coal miners in Yorkshire, England, this sport also known as “put em’ down” and “ferret-down-trousers” is a test of willpower and endurance as competitors place live ferrets down their pants legs and trap them by tying their ankle holes shut. Whoever can keep the ferret in their pants the longest wins… The record is 5½ hours… Yes, you heard correctly. This is an actual sport lol.

According to the sports official website extreme ironing is “the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt.”
